So, liquidwoman posted this interesting sexual orientation scale on her LJ. And I am posting my results here:

Now, I had some trouble with this one. I suppose I just fall into this strange little crack, because some of these questions were difficult to divine the answers to. See, I am married to a trans spouse. You all know that.

I am still attracted to men. I have a spouse that is mentally and emotionally mostly female, but still mostly physically male. My various activities, of which I will spare you a description, are largely heterosexual in, shall we say, arrangement (?).

So while I ended up in the quadrant I expected to, even while being honest about occasional moments of curiosity and flexibility, I'm just not sure these questions quite captured the niche I fall in.

After all, how DO you explain that you are a straight woman who has somehow managed to be married to another woman?

My life just isn't like other people's lives.

So, it's coming up. And soon.

The spouse has decided not to go. She prefers to save her money for the C5 Star Wars convention in Orlando in August. I can understand that. She's trying to rustle up a carpool buddy/roommate, so if you're interested in going, you should contact her for details.

But this means I will need a roomie for MTAC. I have a hotel room within walking distance, and it has a kitchenette, which saves a small fortune on groceries vs. eating at restaurants. It runs about $90 a night.

I have friends that live nearby, and they would probably even happily offer their couches, but I think I would prefer to be within walking distance. In the past, sharing a ride with someone has made a misery of mornings...namely, my usual carpool buddy is on security detail, which means both a late night and an early morning, often with little to no communication. Last year, I was so tired I actually fell asleep in the rave. How do you fall asleep in a RAVE?! Can you imagine how exhausted you'd have to be? But I did, only to discover he'd already left without me. I was furious, and he won't be my carpool buddy again.

Then again, maybe I should keep a room to myself...no spouse for the weekend, empty hotel room, convention full of half-clad cuties... Ah, it is to dream....

Seriously, though, does anyone want to bunk with me? Party in Ishbu's room! I promise, I'll behave myself (unless you request otherwise).

Also, need to get my ass in gear and start planning for Mardi Gras. I am not real happy about it, but I am going to have to move it. Mardi Gras weekend will coincide with Chinese New Year, and apparently there is already a party to which most people in our community are already committed. I don't want to compete and ruin both parties. I suppose I'll have to have my party sooner, because having it after Lent starts completely ruins the point. I will be checking with the lovely Gretta, who has volunteered her new house as venue. At any rate, I am sure it will be fun.

I keep forgetting to post this guy!
Crits! Give me crits!

I intend to submit it as a Threadless design, so tell me what you think works and what doesn't work, as far as you can envision it on a t-shirt. I've maxed out my limit of 8 colors, so I can't add more, only change or remove them.

I haven't decided what color tee to put him on, so if you have a preference on that, please chime in!

A couple people have thought the pipes detract from the Octo too much? Y/N?

ETA: I am also thinking of this in terms of a series...if this gets made into a shirt, the follow up would be mechanical sea horses/sea dragons.

Subject:Had a happy holiday

So, I want to have a pantheistic birthday kegger next year for Yule. I mentioned that already, and I am sure it will be awesome.

Thanks to [info]kotgs , who just very thoughtfully sent me this:
http://www.evolvefish.com/fish/product811.html

Wouldn't those be the perfect party invites?!

So, Jesus isn't THE reason for the season. And actually historical fact doesn't put him in the holiday. But he is still my personal god, and I did celebrate the traditional natal festivities.

Namely, we exchanged gifts, ate a good meal, and went to a movie.

I gave the spouse a Gerber brand multi-tool, a new jump drive, and some jewelry pliers and wire. S/he was very happy, and wears the multi-tool to work in its little pouch daily.

I was given four pairs of slipper socks, one of which is cashmere and woven with shea butter in the fibers. I almost don't want to ever take them off. I was also given "Reboot" and Up.

And the MiL took a diamond ring from around the house and traded in the diamond for a ruby of the same size and some platinum to have it sized for me. Interestingly, the ring wasn't hers...it used to belong to J's first fiancee. I am kind of amused.

The movie was Did You Hear About the Morgans? It was kinda cute...I recommend rental as opposed to theater. It was a compromise...I wanted to see Sherlock and J wanted Avatar.

DInner was a work of art. I made a prime rib stuffed with garlic, butter, parsley, and thyme, crusted with cracked pepper and smoked sea salt, seared and slow-roasted. The pan drippings were skimmed and made into a beef-mustard gravy. The MiL made a duck a l'orange. There was also leftover roasted turkey from Christmas Eve, and for that, I made a sauce of wine, dates, dried cranberries, and cinnamon. There was broccoli, stuffing, and Indian garlic naan, and plenty of nog.

I had wanted to go to my mom's farm in Summertown, but that tanked because the cat got a respiratory infection and the vet was expensive. He's better now, but for a second he looked like he'd caught that plague in The Stand.
We will be missing New Years, too, because we both have to work...and smack in the middle of the day, no less, precluding any travel time before or after work. Oh, well.

Oh, and icing on the cake of life...my three year old niece called me all on her onesies on Christmas night because she wanted to say hi. I love that kid. It's nice to be loved.

While I'm rambling...recent viewing. Just wrapped up Chobits. Adorable. Love Clamp. As [info]major_kusunagi1  says, they could almost animate the Yellow Pages and it would be phenomenal. I also rented Last Exile, which was sublime...it's so sensitively drawn, especially considering how much of it was probabl done on a computer. I think this one could potentially be another one of those "gateway animes" for people who don't like anime.

We also rented District 9. Good to see an alien movie where the humans are the bad guys...but the racism theme became hard to deal with. Also rented a clay-mation piece by the creators of Wallace & Grommit called Shaun the Sheep: Little Sheep of Horrors. Y'all know Wallace & Grommit...I don't think I have to explain about how funny barnyard antics could be in their hands. It was unbelieveably cute, and I think I am a fan. I shall have to look up more of the series.

Well, I suppose that's about a wrap. I've rambled long enough.

Love y'all.
Night!

“Where the Birds Always Sing” – the Cure

The world is neither fair nor unfair
The idea is just a way for us to understand
But the world is neither fair nor unfair
So one survives
The others die
And you always want a reason why

But the world is neither just nor unjust
It's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it
No, the world is neither just nor unjust
And though going young
So much undone
Is a tragedy for everyone

It doesn't speak a plan or any secret thing
No unseen sign or untold truth in anything...
But living on in others, in memories and dreams
Is not enough
You want everything
Another world where the sun always shines
And the birds always sing
Always sing...

The world is neither fair nor unfair
The idea is just a way for us to understand
No the world is neither fair nor unfair
So some survive
And others die
And you always want a reason why

But the world is neither just nor unjust
It's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it
No, the world is neither just nor unjust
And though going young
So much undone
Is a tragedy for everyone

It doesn't mean there has to be a way of things
No special sense that hidden hands are pulling strings
But living on in others, in memories and dreams
Is not enough
And it never is
You always want so much more than this...

An endless sense of soul and an eternity of love
A sweet mother down below and a just father above
For living on in others, in memories and dreams
Is not enough
You want everything
Another world
Where the birds always sing
Another world
Where the sun always shines
Another world
Where nothing ever dies...

If so, my husband has just let me know that one of his coworkers is now a lost traveler there, having been pickpocketed and without a passport or anything on Christmas Eve (meaning that everything is shut down until Tuesday).

If you are able to help in any way, )

This is kind of a long shot, but I might as well try.

Huh. Okay- so I realize probably nobody wants to hear about this anymore, but I kinda' don't care and am saying it anyway.
Well ... if this makes any sense, I feel like I'm hurting in the 'right way' now. It just *feels* like a well, good, type of pain. Much of it follows the shooting pains from the novacaine- which I'm finding bizarre, but the taste in my mouth is a pleasant sweet thing again and it *hurts* in a weirdly good way in my back teeth.

Yeah well, anyhow ...
Found out somebody I work with seriously needs a root canal and said she thinks she has an exposed nerve or something b/c the pain is often so much that she wants to scream on the bad days. But she has a hole in one of teeth from the last root canal and she can't afford to get a crown. Turns out her daughter (8) has had to have a crazy amount of oral work done- 3 oral surgeries poor baby, and will likely need braces in the next year or two. So she's not getting her own stuff fixed.

...
You know, I finished paying off for the root canal on Friday. I only had enough on Thurs to pay half, and when I got paid the next day, I went in and finished it off. I'm having to make a few other sacrifices in order to do so, but with the blessing of overtime at work, it is possible and POOF ! I'm done.
I find this amazing as the last dental work I had done cost only a little more -$550 or so- but took me MANY months to pay it off (6 to 9) and that was a very difficult time for me financially. I'm really not getting paid anymore and I don't know of having any other expenses, but WOW. I guess that little bit of overtime really does make a huge difference. And I'm REALLY GLAD to be able to get it taken care of and paid for. Even when I was in the dental office- as much as I didn't want to be there - a part of me kept thinking, "Ya' know, there are probably lots of people who need to have this same thing done and simply can't afford it."

Now I'm just ... MAD that my coworker needs to have her work done and can't afford it. I know another single Mom here (they both are single Mom's) who I helped out financially a little this summer several times b/c she didn't have grocery money. I just keep finding it awful how many people DO work but can't afford basic necessities.
The system is officially broken.
... or maybe it was just built for a life that no longer exists

There must really be a Santa Claus.

Four days till Commercialmas, stores are packed, lines are long, and I spent a day cashiering. And somehow, everyone was pleasant, happy, up-beat. I made it through a day in retail without being verbally abused. I actually left my workplace without being exhausted and in a foul mood.

It's got to be Santa. Either that, or I should avoid drinking city water for a few days....

I hope it lasts. :)

Subject:*growl* stupid dentists.... root canal etc
Time:12:06 pm
So I had the root canal last Thurs. the procedure, and non-follow up etc )

The dental assistant just called me back, and she (being very sweet and apologetic sounding) said that unfortunately sometimes that can happen. I asked her specifically if it could get worse first, and she said that yes, that was regretably sometimes the case and it could take up to two week's and asked if I needed any more pain med's.

...
OKay
Seriously- what do ya'll think? I mean, I really feel like they are overall giving me *excellent* quality of care here. Buuuuuut ... I do NOT want to go in to get a new crown put on only to have more happen (which is how this really started was 4 years ago I had to get a new crown and the d2mn tooth never stopped hurting and being incredibly sensitive afterwards) I'm freaked out about having things get worse while I'm gone to FL next week too.
Sooo......
*sigh* I'm thinking of calling another dentist in M'boro (farther away, which sucks) just for a consultation- which should run me around $75 (my dental ins is maxed out now). I just feel like I'd feel better if I have someone else take an x-ray and look at it and go "Yes, you're fine." Or see if something looks a little off. And this guy came recommended from my former periodontist (whom I adore) and my sister-in-law (a dental hygenist) had also been pretty positive about him, and I kinda' have a good feeling about him. Maybe... I dunno, kinda' torn, but there's not a lot of time to debate as the office's will be closed Thurs and I'll be gone until late afternoon Dec 31st with the new crown scheduled for the following Thurs, Jan 7th. (Which will be 3 weeks after the procedure and should work.)
*nerves* I don't like not being able to know what's going on with my body and if this is okay and really a temporary thing or not. It's hurting more now than the first two days afterwards and it's making me go spastic. I mean, call me crazy here, but usually having 'work done' is supposed to make things hurt LESS right??
I guess I'm 'scarred' from the other dental thing that should've/seemed to be ideal really NOT being so.

Do you tend to get nostalgic during the holidays? Depressed? Giddy? How do the winter holidays make you feel?

View 620 Answers

I have weird mixed feelings.

I am personally in love with the holidays. Good food, good people, cheerful music, peace, love, comfort, and joy to all people of goodwill.

And then there are the "Keep Christ in Christmas" people who think they own the holiday season wholesale and are actually better than everyone else. Their self-congratulatory attitude is nothing short of bigotry. They piss me off with not only their willful ignorance of other cultures, but usually their woeful ignorance of their own heritage as well.

I try to ignore them and worship in my own way, with love for all. I just wish love sold easier than hate. It's certainly a better product, but it costs more effort and tolerance, and the Walmart mentality doesn't stop with physical products.

fo a lovely Yule rite next year. And it has to be next year, because I'm going to the 9W Community Yule today. Besides, this takes a little planning.

There are lots of gods that have a birthday on or around December 25th, yes?

I say we ditch the trees and nog and get a cake, some silly hats, and a few beers and have a birthday party for them. Even better, get people to dress up as different deities and come to the party as if it were their birthday. We could give out tiny prezzies to everyone.

Some perverse part of my brain wants to see Isildae in Birkenstocks and tie-dye showing up with a water jug full of Manischewitz and having a grand old time with whoever dresses as Dionysus. But that's just my twisted, irreverent sense of humor and is neither here nor there. I still think the party in general is a lovely idea.

Dear Customers,
I would like to begin this letter by wishing you a happy holiday season. I truly, sincerely do wish you all peace, love, comfort, and joy for this time and for the whole year through.

The other day, one of you accosted me at work. I wished you a happy holiday, and you returned my well-wishes by asking me why I didn’t wish you a merry Christmas. I asked you how you didn’t know if I were Jewish. Your reply was to actually SHOUT at me that you didn’t care, my religion didn’t matter, and that Christmas is the only true holiday and that “we haven’t been celebrating a fake holiday for 2000 years.” You then proceeded not to wish me a merry Christmas, but to actually instruct me to have one. This I found particularly disgusting and bigoted, as I had just told you that I didn’t celebrate it. To add insult to injury, my co-worker backed you up, congratulating you for the courage to stand up for what you believed.

Let me tell you something. It doesn’t take courage to be in the majority. It takes courage to stand up and be the minority. And it takes courage to stand up for the rights of others to live their own lives, even if you do not believe what they do. To quote Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Is this not the land of the free?

Firstly, on the subject of the age of Christmas. It hasn’t been celebrated for 2000 years. The date of Christmas was fixed at December 25th in the year 829 at the first Diet of Worms in Worms, Germany. Prior to that date, the feast was celebrated anywhere from November to January, although the actual date of Christ’s birth has never been determined. Recent studies in Hebrew astronomy, based on clues in the Biblical story, actually place the birth of Christ somewhere between March 17th and May 5th. Which makes sense; “Shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.” This was done in the spring and summer. In the winter, you kept the animals inside. Desert winters are bitterly cold.

Christmas did not become a major holiday until the 1500s. Prior to that date, it was overshadowed by Michaelmas and Epiphany. So in short, Christmas has only been celebrated actively in Western culture for about 500 years.

In contrast to this, the Jews have been celebrating Hanukkah since the re-dedication of the Temple of Solomon in 164 BCE. That would outdate Christmas by over 1600 years. The Muslims are celebrating both Ashura and Al-Hijira. Buddhists are celebrating a holiday called Bodhi Day, which commemorates the enlightenment of the Buddha, a religion that also outdates Christianity by a very, very long shot. And there are many, many more.

And the Christian symbols themselves stem from pagan predecessors, each and every one. The Christmas tree comes from ancient Germany, as do evergreen wreaths. Holly is from France and Britain. These symbols were rather loosely appropriated in order to convert pagans, based on the verse from Elijah, “And a root shall sprout from the stump of Jesse’s tree,” predicting that the Messiah would come from the House of David. Not a stretch of the imagination, considering Solomon had 200 wives. I could go on, but I think that's enough.

Do I think that makes Christmas fake? No, not a bit. The celebration counts. It’s important, and the shared symbols from across cultures tend to lend weight to all of the cultures that use them; the sharing of truths larger than simple ideology. But this doesn’t mean Christmas supersedes its older cousins, either. Age alone doesn’t guarantee validity, and the symbols are universal.

Universal for what? Faith. That God cares about us, however it is we envision Him. That spring will come and bring salvation of varying kinds. That we can come together with people we love and have warmth and comfort in the bleak midwinter. That this moment of time matters in the endless march or eternity.

Keep Christ in Christmas? OK. But what’s the good of spreading rancor by proselytizing? Aren’t you missing the point of your own festival by picking a fight over a distinction between “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Holidays”? Can’t you just give the well-wishes back?
And at that, even if you just want to stick to your comfort zone, had you not noticed that there are multiple Christian holidays this time of year? You just celebrated Thanksgiving. You are about to celebrate Christmas. And after that, I have no doubt you will celebrate the new year. Can I not wish you well for all of those holidays? Why do I just have to wish that you enjoy the most contentious one?

Whoever you are, please do have a happy holiday season. Better yet, enjoy them all. I think you will find you have more in common with others than you think.

Sincerely,
A Tullahoma Retail Clerk

I'll let them believe the lie ! :) they were awesoem though. After the third shot, the pain went away- WHEW. Have one guy who keeps varrying between scary interested and nice interested that I don't like back equally. Have one former co-worker with whom there is a slim possibility. And just got asked out for coffee but another former co-worker (musician and IT guy) ... although HIS annoys me because we talked years ago about going to the symphony together (BEFORE I made the don't date coworkers rule) and then when I kept asking him for a night he could go like, he totally freaked out and bailed on me. GRRRRRRR- stupid freakin' Mexican. >P But still, will go talk. Long time, lots to gossip over if nothing else. Oh yeah, and email dude on the dating sight.
phew
Must just be the holiday's. Put the itch into a few of the men. bleh !!!
